In-depth analysis

Copyright.

The person that made the art/design is someone named copyright he use's a mixture of different techniques such as illustration which is what I'm looking at right now and stencil/ graffiti which goes together really well and is really cool. this artist is not very known he does street art which is then sold on his website. The piece that Im looking at is just simply a piece of street art and illustration goes into a lot of his work to help him out with all his stencils. It has sort of been exhibited tot he pubic as it is street art but it depends how you see his work. i have chosen to research this piece due to the fact that he is relating to my work in the illustration way but also he has done graffiti and in my art work I am working on a street art piece so int hat way it related to me and my work.

the piece its self is called american princess, then shortly after this he redone the work by making american princess 2 with is basically the same as this but with a different angle of the girl and different dress along with some different backgrounds. One famous quote by the artist is, is fear not money? as implying that  when you have fear you will then get money so in a way it fits in with his work very well as he does street art and that is all about fear and the fear of not getting court doing it is very overwhelming and at the end of the day he gets money out of it so his quote really does make sense.
The theme i think he is trying to show off is that of how the girls in america are seen as princess but in realty they are nothing more that some street art so basically calling them a tramp in a sort of way, you get this understanding from the title and when you look into the work with more detail. I think with this work it is all about a story of a girl in america trying to find her way which is why he made two of the piece with different titles. i think the artist has found inspiration from just living in america which just sums up why he did this piece.

the materials he has used are spray paints as you can clearly see all around the piece, you can see he has used pencils maybe pens to get the image onto a stencil maybe, also it looks like it may have been touched up in Photoshop so he would have used a mac for this work. the artist has gone for the rough effect so he has used bright colors but in a bad way so this is very effective to the piece as a whole. The work doesn't look like its massive but it would propley fit a wall somewhere.

My first reaction to this work is that it looks really cool the only thing i really dislike about this piece is that i is taking the piece out of american girls saying they are rich but I don't think the artist has seen what some american girls go though out in the states to get a good understanding of what is going on. this work has really inspired me to go on and try out many different types of stenciling and for that I am very great full i stumbled across this artist he is great.

Indepth analysis

David Shrigley

The art is made by david shrigley him self and also designed himself, he normally does very weird drawings that can be called random if you will. the artist is 44 and came from macclesfield, the piece of art/ work that i have here is called "Im dead" it can be a sculpture i guess but I wouldn't say its completely a sculpture but it is the close's to that in the name of art I guess. the art work was made at the start of 2012 a date hasn't completely been given but does say at the start of 2012. The work was made for his first major exhibition which was called brain activeity which I went along to early February to look at his work. My reason for me researching him is because when I went down their I felt that I was very in torch with him as we both have the same sort of style of working as we both work with the funny aspect of drawing and live in a whole. I also use the same materials and techniques as him like drawing and as Ive said before we have the same humour as each other, and over all he really inspired me to do some work like him and it came out really well and it the same style.

I have looked at the real thing so at the gallery to get a better understanding of his work and I have looked at some websites to do with him and this piece of work of the dead jack Russell.

A interview david hade with the timeout

Dave Eggers: ‘You’ve said before that when you’re drawing, you’re taking on a role. That is, that there’s a persona, almost, that you’ve generated who is behind your work. But I wonder how you get to the place where you create. The drawings, at their best, I think, have a desperateness to them that I like to assume you’re only reaching after drinking heavily, or being depressed, or being alone at 4 am.’
David Shrigley: ‘Well, I’m quite disciplined and always totally sober. There’s a specific amount of caffeine and sugar and nutrition to get stuff done – you get to your forties and realize you’ve got to eat stuff otherwise you get really grumpy. There’s a certain zone that you get into that you’re kind of almost not really thinking anymore, but it just feels like it’s all pouring out of you like water out of a jug. But it’s not necessarily any good. Sometimes it’s terrible. So yeah, I do have those moments, but if I had a glass of wine, that’s it, game over. I’m going upstairs to watch CSI: Miami.'
The theme of this work and what went with the rest of the exhibition and his other pieces is that it is all of david shrigley's ideas and things that he wants to get out to the rest of the world.

The materials/techniques that are used in this work is that of getting a dead dog and changing what it doing so you can make it hold up the sign post "Im dead", with this the techniques being used are very visual and very deep. So this is showing that the dog is dead but to make the artwork even better you have to have a real dead dog that is stuffed and with these all put together it shows off as a great piece of work. With this piece of work the artist isn't showing of much colour which in its self is using colour to get a better effect of the work in hand, so say if he chose to do the base of where the dogs standing pink, it would show off a different feeling and their for change the effect into a loving and homely thing instead of it being a deep dark thing that the artist is trying to show off. The scale of this piece is not that big but is big in the sense of how much it gets seen, it is on the poster that shows that david shirgley is having a exhibition also is the most poplar piece at the exhibition so is very big in that sense.

The reason why I have chosen to do this artist and this piece is because i feel I have a real connection with this artist as me and him both share a sort of art/ humour and he is just a really cool artist to research and he makes me want to do this in depth analysis, along with this I have seen up-close the work that Im researching so it makes it easier to get a understanding of what Im saying here. My first reaction to this work was this guy is crazy, and from then on out I have loved his work and have been very inspired to do drawings like this and have done them since I have seen him. I like how the dog is real and he shows of that with the sign post, and I like how their is a funny element to it but in a dark and sick way if you will, i dislike that its in a box it shows that maybe the artist is to scared to let the dog out of the cage in a way. The only similar work that I have seen is that of my own which is very strange but it is the only thing I can relate his work to that I've seen.

evaulation

For my final CD packageing I used a number of different techniques to pull of my packageing which took alot of expermenting and other all good skilled work to achieve the final outcome. So along the way of this project I have done many things which have all pulled together to make my final outcome. First we started off doing different logo techniques and soon after that we did our final logos here is a picture of my final logo below this text.

When making this logo I first started following a tutail but towards the end I realised I was just doing what felt right and ended up making this logo which is really simply done buy using loads of circles to make the base of this logo and then changing the colour and in one case changing the grange effect, when it came to the font I was listening to the killers when choosing this and the first thing that came to my head was to do loads of different fonts to make it look really cool and effective just like the killers.
After my logo was finshed I went on to make/ design net for my final packageing, in my skecth book I came up with 6 different ideas which then went into my presentation to show the whole class what ive been doing with my time. With these designs other and done with I got to work on my final net, before I get to finishing my net I had to first do the artwork that would go on my net, so I drew out many different drawings a picked the best ones, with these drawings they all had something to do with the lyrics in the songs such as, with "Mr brightside" I drew a man with a lightbulb for a head which worked really well with my album artwork. This picture is of a hand reaching out to grab what it used to have in relation to jenny was a friend of mine.

This worked very well because when I put it onto my net I made sure I overlayed and softlighted the art work so it would blend in with the effect that I chose for my net which worked really well so I made sure I did this effect with the rest of drawings/artworks.
Another thing I had to do was inlay which is basically the booklet that goes into my CD packageing and here is my final inlay.

Along with 4 songs from the album I put in the inlay I put in 2 of my drawings that I drew to go on the net so it would give people and chance to see the work again. After the inlay was done their was only one final thing to do which was build/make my CD packaging, it wasn't easy to do as in the last day bits didn't fit together but after a lot of extra hours and work put into it I finally made it so here is my final net design back and front of it.

With these two put together I felt that I really did well in this project with all the hours I have put into it I can say Im proud of this packaging, now on the back I have put the barcode for the real CD "Hot Fuss" and if you can see I have also added a QR code which if scanned will take the user to my blog, this was  just a little touch that I really wanted to add at the end to make the packaging look and feel just that little bit better.
Over all I have really enjoyed this project although it wasn't a very long project, if I had more time with this project I think I would have made it so the CD would slide out of the packaging instead of the user to have to open it to get to the CD but apart from that I think I have done a good job with this project.

QR code

This is a QR code, it is used all other many different range of things such as adverts and is put on products so the customer can quickly go to the company website with out any problems. so I thought it would be a good idea to make one and since its free to do on this website: http://qrcode.kaywa.com, I decided to make one that would go directly to my blog.

Final art work for Net

These are my final piece's of artwork the soilder is to represent the lyrics "I got a soul but im not a soulder which is the the song All these things Ive done. The hand is for the song jenny was a freind of mine which is like the hand is loseing something so It looks as if its reaching out for something. And my favioute drawing that goes with the effect very well is the mouth which is representing smile like you mean it which is another lyric/song.

Net design

This is my final net design,Although I haven't yet put any work onto it I feel that It will work well, from here on out I will have to see what designs work well with my packaging and what drawings will work well with the effect when its finally onto my net.

Logo intial ideas

With these two logos what I did was an abstract logo which is a symbol or a shape that would represent a company in my case a band but i felt that it didnt really look to go to be a logo. The other one I did on the right is a lettermark logo which is a typography logo that spells out the company in this case the band and the band being the killers.

Packaging analysis

Mt first reaction this piece of work was that it looks a bit plain a bit boring but when you realise who the target audience is and what the product actually is, you realise that it fits well with the product so their for isnt a bad design.
Its not really a bad this its more of a album with loads of bands on it which is the football product, the jakebox is just a CD packaging and no band goes with it and the other box is a nokia box which is a phone company.
Jakob skarin made these three products and with him he has a very different style but yet it stays with his product design as he goes on and makes them which is a really good thing .
The sort of people who would listern to a football song CD would be those who go down to watch games on a regular basses so I would say the target audience is middle-aged men or young adults. The text and the imagery for what I can see on this CD cover is very in your face text its serposted to be loud and get the message across and the imagery is just people playing football and a grassy background to relate to the football theme.
This work shows off a lot of different folding techniques which I may look into to use for my own work, so in my opinon this work is good not the best CD packageing Ive seen though but good and has shown me that I can use many different techniques when folding together my work.

1.One, Glasgow Uni tower stencil 2, Littile talks album cover 3. three, gun stencil 4. killers battle born cover 5. killers them selfs 6. Cd packageing

backgrounds

This background is one of my favioutes but not one of the best to make, it is very complacated to do but really does have an amazing effect when you see it and the logo put together like this.

This is a really good background as I think it would grap the target audience's attention and when they realise that the background is the first letter of the band being"K" I think they would think its a pretty well done background although it was the easiest background to make it makes the effect even better as it is very simple.

This effect could of looked good if I did more work on it but as it is I think it would go well with my band as the name is the killers so it would sort of fit in within the theme of kill maybe Im not sure.

This background was the hardest to make but again it has a really good effect when you see it, I may use this effect but in a different way maybe I will have a white background and have the logo in the middile but feel in the logo colour with this bubbley effect which may or may not work wwe wil just have to see.

Chemical brothers

This is a album cover for the album called "push the button" by the chemical brothers. When I first looked at this album cover I looked straight at the middle of the chummily  and the hand coming out of it and the sort of smoke well thats what you think it is, is basically a face and in the face has the words Push the button as in album title and in away the smoke is saying that life is all just a big puff of smoke.
The target audience is for the middle aged people I recon by the way they have done the album.

I think the album cover is very effective at trying to portray a message which is that life is all just about pushing buttons? and then fact that everything to do with society is all about yourself.

The colour in this is very boring but apart from the text's colour is very eye catching which sort of works with the boring colour in the background so your eye makes you see the font in the face.

I do like this artwork but I think its to boring and is one of the boring ones out of all the albums as it has no life to it although the inside may be cool it doesn't help the fact that its boring on the outside. This has of influenced me in some of my design techniques though out looking at different things but then again I don't think ill be using them again for anything else.

The shins album cover

This is the album cover for the band named "The shins. When you first see this album cover you think ok looks childish in away but then when you into more you find the childishness slips away and becomes and deep message about everything that is wrong with this world which of course you automatically thing thats what the songs in the album will be about whats on the cover.
The target audience is for once again a young age which would be the people that actually listen this sort of music.
The materials that would have made this work is I would say is a basic pencil maybe pen the taken into photoshop to touch up on maybe not to sure.
The info on the inner sleeve is basic drawings and also with this album cover its a sort of pop up thing that you can interact with and all the images with the pop ups are all about the songs with in the album.
The artwork is very well done to fit with the album and the people behind it "the Shins".

Coldplay X & Y CD album cover

This is the album cover for the Coldplay album called "X & Y". When you first look at this you think what is the object or thing in the middle of the album cover, so when I first looked at the cover i thought it was a bomb type thing that could of related to one of the songs in the album, but this album cover has more to it than first meets the eyes.

I think the target audience is to people aged between 16-24 the young age sort of audience would like this as one the music is their sort of thing and the art on the cover could relate to them and stick out to them in away. This coded image on the cover is related to one of the songs which has a secret hidden parlitatical message with in the piece its self.

The only technique I can think of that would relate to this sort of work would be that of photoshop or another program on a computer that could do imagery such as that. The only typography on this CD cover is the albums artist who are Coldplay and the name of the album "X&Y".
This has to be one of the most effective ways of portraying a message as in the album it has the alphabet for the code on the front cover which if the audience takes the time to look will get what the imagery on the front cover says.
With this work I really do like the idea behind the artwork but in the end its not really artwork as its more of the english side of things as the alphabet is in this image that it is trying to portray.

Vector

This is my attempt at doing a vector with my chosen artist "Brandon flowers" as you can see I didn't do a very good job at this as to say with my screen printing effect on him I did in a past post. But in some way it looks good with him being almost cub like which could relate back to cubism.

Screen printing effect

With this technique what we had to do was to get two pictures one of are chosen artist one of a animals head to replace the head of my artist. Mine was brandon flowers the lead singer of "the killers", and as you can see my animal is of a frog. So first we had to make it look like we screen printed it which is basically going into - image - adjustments and then going to shadow/highlights which gave off the effect of that we did made this image by screen printing. The it was just the mater of fact of getting the image of the frog and replacing the head of my artist with the frogs head and doing the same effect business that we did for the body.
